What the test looks like

Four 35-minute multiple-choice sections: two scored Logical Reasoning, one scored Reading Comprehension, one unscored section (LR or RC, any position). Plus unscored LSAT Argumentative Writing, 50 minutes (15 prewriting + 35 writing), taken remotely on demand (ProctorU via LawHub), never at a Prometric center.

Starting with the August 2026 LSAT, LSAC is moving toward in-center testing at Prometric centers for almost all U.S. and international test takers, with limited exceptions. The multiple-choice portion is proctored by Prometric and delivered through LawHub at the center. Announced Feb 11, 2026. Registration for 2026-27 opened May 19, 2026. Find LSAT test centers.

Unscored but required. A debatable issue with three or four perspectives; the essay takes a position and addresses other perspectives. Included in the LSAT fee; not sold standalone.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next LSAT?

The next LSAT with registration open is January 2027. Register by Dec 1, 2026. The full schedule for the 2026-2027 testing year is in the table above.

How much does the LSAT cost?

Registration is $253 and includes the Argumentative Writing section. Most applicants also need the Credential Assembly Service ($219) plus $45 for each law school report. Fee waivers are available.

Is the LSAT taken in person now?

Yes. Starting with the August 2026 LSAT, most test takers sit the multiple-choice sections at a Prometric test center. Remote testing is limited to a few exceptions, such as living more than 180 miles or three hours' drive from a center with space. Argumentative Writing is still taken remotely.

When do LSAT scores come out?

Scores are released at 9 a.m. ET on the score release date listed for each test, about three weeks after testing, as long as LSAC has an approved writing sample on file.

How many times can I take the LSAT?

Five times within the current reportable score period (since July 2021) and seven times lifetime; no retake after a 180 in the reportable period; canceled scores count, absences and withdrawals do not; tests before September 2019 do not count.

Is the LSAT changing in 2027?

From the August 2027 LSAT (2027-2028 cycle), unscored pretest questions are embedded in the three scored sections, with no standalone unscored section. Fixed order: Reading Comprehension (52 min, 6 passages, 40 questions, 27 scored), then two Logical Reasoning sections (45 min, 32 questions, 25 scored each), with a 10-minute break after section 1 and after section 2. Scored counts (27 RC + 50 LR), question types and time per question (avg 78 s RC, 84 s LR) unchanged; 120-180 scale unchanged; experience is 10 minutes longer (8 of them extra break). New-format practice tests in LawHub from February 2027.
